Coach Matt Williams
A Franklin, TN native, Matt Williams was introduced to wrestling in 6th grade while attending Battle Ground Academy (BGA). A dedicated multi-sport athlete, Matt capped off his high school wrestling career with a 4th place finish at the state tournament in 2002. He went on to attend the United States Naval Academy, where he earned three varsity letters playing football for Navy—contributing to four consecutive victories over Army—and graduated in 2006 with a degree in Naval Architecture.
Following graduation, Matt served 11 years as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps, deploying twice to Iraq with 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment. He concluded his military career as a Major, most recently commanding K Company, 3rd Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment in Smyrna, TN.
Matt returned to BGA as a wrestling coach during the 2011–2013 seasons and has been assisting with WCWC for the past four years. His passion for the sport extends to his family—Ford, his oldest son, enters his fifth season with the club, Jackson is a two time state champion, and his youngest son Colton finished as a state runner-up in his inaugural season.
Matt believes wrestling is one of the only arenas in our society that instills both tangible and intangible spartan like principles into the children of today, that will continue to serve them well throughout their lives. He focuses on developing solid fundamentals with newer wrestlers as a foundation to accelerate their learning curve and develop a love for the sport.
Matt holds an MBA from Belmont University and is currently serving his third term as a Williamson County Commissioner representing District 9. He lives just outside Franklin with his wife, Heather, and their four children: Ford (11), Jackson (8), Colton (5), and Brooklynn (1).
